On Friday 18th February Laxton Junior School took sixteen pupils to the County Chess Championships where the Under 9 team triumphed and won their tournament. The School also had a team placed as runners-up in the Under 11 tournament. One pupil, Alexander Richards won the U-9 prize, and, Sam Herring, a pupil from Oundle School, won the County U-18 prize, both with perfect scores.
This success followed on from Laxton Junior School’s success last month at the English Primary Schools Chess Qualifier in Birmingham. The EPSCQ is a very serious competition and for some pupils attending it was their first time. Nevertheless two Under 11 teams and two Under 9 teams qualified for the Semi Finals at Pontins, Prestatyn in early June when they will enjoy a weekend of chess competition.
The Head of Laxton Junior School Mr Mark Potter commented that, ‘we are very proud of everyone who took part in the recent chess tournaments. With the help of teaching staff and also Sam Herring, a pupil from Oundle School, the children have put the practice hours in and significantly improved their chess prowess over recent months.’
